News Brief

Eco friendly innovations use Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate.

Full Story:

The production and supply of aggregates is often considered to be the second oldest profession in the world, hence, it is always gratifying to discover applications where products are utilised in up-to-the minute applications. Such is the case with Light Weight Expanded Clay Aggregate (often referred to as "Leca" or "Hydroleca").

A photo-opportunity caught our eye* whilst driving along the A66 near Scotch Corner in North Yorkshire The eco-friendly people at Cross Lanes Organic Farm Shop (great stop-off for foodies and a superb café) have installed a novel north facing “green roof” for grazing sheep.

Whilst Specialist Aggregates were not involved in the Cross Lanes installation it is probable that Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate was used both as drainage and an insulation layer under the meadow grass sward. A similar yet more conventional sedum based green roof has been installed on the south facing aspect of the building.

Talking of sheep, or more specifically the methane gas produced by their digestive systems, Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate granules are again finding application.

Apart from sheep, methane (CH4) is known to be naturally released from the ocean floor and fresh water lakes. However, research has shown that oxidising microbes digest much of this gas before it reaches the atmosphere. Indeed observations on the recent BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico have concluded that a significant proportion of the methane discharged along with the oil was removed in the sea by methane munching bugs before it reached the atmosphere.

The study of methane and potential methods for its amelioration is significant as it is a powerful green house gas produced by bio-degradation in landfill sites. Recently Specialist Aggregates was asked to advise on a suitable aggregate to be seeded with methane digesting bacteria and commissioned into a porous landfill gas filter. Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate was the obvious solution as its round shape promoted good flow characteristics, whilst the honeycomb structure gave maximum surface area.

· Safety Note: Figure of speech -The car was parked with the engine switched off before any images were taken.
