Aqua - A Bluish Green or Greenish Blue ?
Sunday 20 October, 2019
News Brief

Specialist Aggregates' boss visits the spiritual home of all things Aqua to try his hand at glass blowing.

Reflecting the colour of the sacred waters of the Goddess Sulis, and inspired by Roman design, the Bath Aqua Glass Company specialise in hand made glassware. Each creation is infused with copper oxide affording the piece with a delicate blue aqua colour.

Full Story:

Whilst Specialist Aggregates have supplied their version of an aqua coloured glass for many years, the boss took a day off to visit Bath in Somerset, the spiritual home of all things Aqua to establish if the colour Aqua a bluish green or a greenish blue?

The site of the modern City of Bath, was recognised at least 1000 years before the Roman invasion as the sacred site of the hot water springs dedicated to the Goddess Sulis. In the first century AD the conquering Romans adopted the pagan site and made it their own by building a series of magnificent baths and other major public buildings.

Today Bath has a thriving artisan quarter based on Walcot Street. This modern thorough fare co-incidentally follows the line of the Roman Road known as the Fosse Way. At the northern end of the street can be found the thriving studio, glass museum and shop of the Bath Aqua Glass Company.

With the vision of reflecting the colour of the sacred waters of the Goddess Sulis, and inspired by Roman (and Georgian) design and form, the company specialise in hand made glassware. Each creation is infused with copper oxide affording the piece with a delicate blue aqua colour.

Whilst it was a great day out, as our images show we are no closer to establishing a true definition of the colour known to many as Aqua.
Our first image shows the blue-aqua stock at the Aqua Glass Company.

The second image shows the boss trying his hand at hot glass working at The Aqua Glass Studio ( I’m not sure the Romans had much call for paperweights! – Internet Ed)

In the centre of the city the waters of Roman baths are coloured by the presence of green algae having a bit of a photosynthesise in the sunshine giving a decidedly green –aqua colour.

Whilst the colour conundrum was not solved we would thoroughly recommend a visit to Bath and its historic treasures, just don’t expect to be able to park – use the train or park and ride!
