Bavaria's Jurassic lagoons provide a source of coral sand
Friday 18 January, 2013
News Brief

Answer to an ecological dilemma - provide aquaria with coral beach sand without taking sand from a coral beach.

Full Story:

Modern day coral sands are essentially Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3). However apart from the all important chemical composition it is the distinctive creamy-white tropical island beach colour that makes coral sand so appealing to both the professional and enthusiast aquarist

With sufficient time and geological process coral sands can become compacted to form limestone rocks. Hence, we considered that if we searched quarried limestone deposits in the UK it should be possible to locate a suitable substitute for coral sand.

Certainly if one looks, for example, in Derbyshire, or the North of England limestone is being quarried on a considerable scale, indeed in the UK over 57 million tonnes were worked in 2009 for roadstone, concrete aggregates, construction and other industrial uses (Consumption England & Wales - 2009 Aggregate Minerals Survey, British Geological Survey).

However, in spite of an extensive search we were unable to locate a suitable alternative either in terms of its aesthetic appeal and/or its size grading, which caused us to look further afield.

Whilst Bavaria in Southern Germany is perhaps not the first place that comes to mind when thinking of coral beaches, the cream coloured limestones worked from the Jura Mountains for tiles and cladding materials provide the perfect solution. Added to this one of the quarries manufactures high quality limestone granules for industrial processes and water filtration.

Our Jura Coral Sand was formed in tropical lagoons some 140million years ago in the area that now gives its name to the Jurassic, the great geological era of reptiles. It appears fitting that this rock should now become a viable and more eco-friendly replacement for modern day coral sand.
