Zimbabwe's Balancing Rocks provide design inspiration

Full Story:

Inspired by the East African balancing rock landforms that were featured on the infamous Zimbabwe Bilion Dollar bills of 2008, Specialist Aggregates have introduced the Kopje Stack, a multi-layered garden feature.

Kopje in Southern Africa, or Granite Tors as they are known in the UK are thought to have been formed below ground level by water percolating down through joints and cracks to the natural water table and literally rotting the stone in-situ. Later episodes of erosion brought about either by uplift or solifluction in regions in close proximity to glaciation led to the decomposed material being stripped away and leaving any unaltered rock standing proud.

Our Kopje Stacks are made to order, and can be constructed from a range of materials including rustic slate, black slate and tumbled paddlestones. Unlike the natural self- supporting balancing rocks, the stacks are safely supported by a steel column drilled through the stones. The steel supporting column can be used in conjunction with a suitable pump to turn the stack into a unique water feature as shown by the images opposite.

Our images also show the balancing stones at Epsworth as depicted on the Zimbabwe bank notes, and the enigmatic Bowermans nose, a striking granite tor near Manaton on Dartmoor, Devon, together with a fun balance stone stack spotted on the beach at Priests Cove, Cape Cornwall.
