News Brief

Noble Black Sand

Full Story:

To many black is seen as the colour of uncertainty and darkness, however, in Japanese culture black (kuro) is a symbol of experience and even aristocracy.

After a black volcanic ash cloud caused so much disruption in Northern Europe it is hardly surprising that black is seen as a colour of doom and forboding. However, without such extreme heat process we would not be able to supply our popular black sands.

Our images show the site of the Eyafjallajokull icecap in Iceland sitting over the strato volcano which errupted so spectacularly in April 2010. Taken from a light aircraft by Specialist Aggregates just seven days before the catastrophic erruption, the image also shows the lagoon at the base of Gigjokull (crater glacier) which was washed away by the ensuing torrent of meltwater.

Our second image shows a small section of the black sand beaches produced by repeated episodes of volcanic activity which flank over 100 miles along the southern coastline of Iceland.

Finally, our coarse black sand is seen to have been used to great effect with sempervivam ( Houseleeks) on an award winning show garden.
