News Brief

UK source of Black Obsidian Glass

Full Story:

Whilst there are no commercially worked deposits of natural obsidian in the UK, in conjunction with master glass formulator and manufacturer, Plowden & Thompson (Stourbridge, UK, DY8 4YN ) Specialist Aggregates can now offer a stunning black obsidian glass in a range of sizes including 50mm cobbles for use as in merchandising assignments, as a “non combustible” coal for theatres and museums, and in the increasingly popular hobby of flint knapping.

In nature obsidian is not widely distributed and its origins are complex. Chemically it is in the same series as the granites that give rise to the Tors of Dartmoor in Devon, and as pumice seen on the Lipari Islands in the Mediterranean. It is thought that under certain conditions in explosive eruptions whilst pumice is still in a semi-plastic state ( probably at temperatures of up to 900oC) the grains literally become welded together and annealed to form the natural black glass.

Our images show a pumice quarry on the side of Mt Hekla, our new obsidian cobbles and a family visit to Hay Tor in Devon.

Obsidian Spaggtoid : It has been discovered that the black pupils of the eyes on the gigantic statues on Easter Island (Moai) were made from obsidian.
