Crunchy Gravels Banned

News Brief

"Crunchy" gravels fall foul of planning regulations.

Full Story:

Well that’s a new one on us (Feb 2011) ……………. Apparently a planning department has stipulated that the gravel to be used on a new-build development has to be a “quiet gravel” to prevent noise nuisance to neighbours when traffic drives over it.

Whilst some gravels may provide a quieter ride – indeed slate chippings would pack down well and provide an almost silent surface, surely this rather defeats a long recognised benefit of “crunchy” gravels, providing a deterrent to intruders.

Whilst "Quiet Gravels" could be a whole new market area for Specialist Aggregates, it wouldn’t be the first time stone has been used for sound deadening: In the 1980’s a specially blended limestone marketed as Quitex, from Shierglas Quarry near Pitlochry in Scotland was widely used to fill cavities and hence deaden noise in tenement buildings in Glasgow.
