News Brief

Two out of three Grand Designs Live finalists choose Specialist Aggregates.

Full Story:

Update ************* 3.30 PM Friday 4th October.
Congratulations to Liz Ackerley of Poppyhead Consultancy on becoming this year’s Grand Designs Live - Garden Designer of the Year.
******************

Grand Designs Live Garden Designer of the Year competition returned to the Birmingham show on the 4th to 6th October, with finalists being challenged to design an Urban Kitchen Garden with due consideration to contemporary style, inspiration, and E2 responsibility.

Liz Ackerley’s gourmet urban garden was designed with a professional environmentally aware couple in mind. The garden combined growing herbs, salads and fruit together with the opportunity of having friends around to enjoy an outside sensory “eco urban chic” retreat.

Specialist Aggregates were involved in a key design feature of the garden. They supplied the stone fill for the Gabion retained raised beds, and also furnished aspects of hardscaping detail including scallop shells to make bug-hotels, polished black pebbles for the base of the water feature and black slate seating.

Meanwhile next door, Ben Harrison’s Freecycle garden was more Colliery Row than Urban Vogue. Whilst its Jam and Chutney glass jar herb wall might be considered “conceptual”, it provided tantalising glimpses of the garden within and maintained a hardscaping coherence with the innovative free draining gravel courtyard.

Ben cleverly overcame the problem of “gravel scatter” by utilising a very effective “geo-grid” system. By employing a bottle-bank recycled crushed glass from Specialist Aggregates as the gravel, he provided both a visual link to the herb wall and referenced the glass’ functional application as a free draining material used for swimming pool and water filtration.

Horticultural excellence the competition certainly wasn’t, who indeed would attempt to build a show garden in October? However, for a three day indoor build and presentation under the NEC’s colour sapping sodium lights, all three gardens provided inspiration and design detail of a standard worthy of the event.
