Harena, 4-8mm No Fines Lightweight Aggregate offered for the onsite production of lightweight permeable concrete.

Granule Size: Approx. 4-8mm.

Bulk Density: Harena is a lightweight aggregate with a bulk density at point of supply of approximately 850 kg/m³. (ie volume for volume Harena is approximately half the weight of "normal" limestone or gravel aggregate).

Moisture Content: As supplied Harena lightweight aggregate is likely to contain a natural moisture content of approximately 15%.

Description & Application:
Harena is a brick-like lightweight aggregate that is resistant to frost and chemicals, and will not break down in water. It is also non-combustible and has excellent sound and thermal insulation properties.

The selected close grading of Harena aggregate contains a minimum of "fines", (see typical grading below) making it ideal for the on-site production of lightweight permeable concrete. The manufacture of such will require the addition of cement (opc) purchased separately.

Principal Advantages of Harena Lightweight Permeable Concrete

Concrete Screed Density Using the model design mix described below, screed densities of approximately 1.05 tonnes per m³ can be achieved. This represents half the weight of traditional natural limestone / gravel based concretes, providing significant weight savings and ease of manual placement.
Quicker Drying Out - Free passage of air through the no fines structure ensures efficient drying.
Low Shrinkage Harena Lightweight permeable Concrete exhibits low shrinkage ( 0.04%) therefore laying in bays is unnecessary.

Falls - Ideal material for constructing falls as there is no maximum depth to which it can be laid.

Design Considerations:

Strength / Mix Design
Clients should confirm mix design appropriate for their specific application.

A model design demonstrates that a 10:1, 4-8mm Harena:Cement by volume may achieve a 6.0 N/mm² compressive strength. ie 1m³ bag of Harena requires 150kg (6x25kg) of cement.

Adequate water is required to hydrate the cement and provide workability. It is suggested that a water / cement ratio of 0.5 is used, ie approximately 75 ltrs (kg) of water per m³ of Harena aggregate. Best practice suggests that half of the water is first mixed with the aggregate to ensure it is fully saturated before the cement and final volume of water is added. Thorough mixing is required. Should additional water be required to aid workability it should be done sparingly as "wash out" of the cement paste from the aggregate is easily achieved.

Minimum Recommended Thickness:
When bonded to a hardened base - 25mm

Maximum Recommended Thickness:
Unlike conventional concrete there is no maximum thickness to which Harena Lightweight Permeable Concrete can be laid.

Laying:
Harena Lightweight Permeable Concrete should be laid and tamped by hand - mechanical placement should not be used.

Source:
Harena (often generically known in the trade as Lytag) lightweight aggregate is manufactured from selected natural clays, which are pelletised before firing in a rotary kiln. As it is fired, moisture in the pellets expands to produce a microporous core while the pellet fuses to a brick-like form. The resulting granules are lightweight, porous, and have a high resistance to crushing.

Environmental Considerations:
As Harena Lightweight Aggregate is approximately 50% the weight of "normal" aggregate, twice the volume can be carried, reducing vehicle movements both on and off highway.

Logistics:
This product option is supplied in a non returnable bulk bag on a pallet and stretch wrapped for additional protection and security.

Pallets are delivered by national couriers and off-loaded onto a level hard-standing using vehicle tail-lift and pallet truck. Our couriers do not offer a crane (Hiab) off-load facility.

Pallet deliveries by national couriers are not advised for locations with narrow or difficult access. Please advise during checkout or contact our office for advice if you have specific delivery requirements or concerns.

Failed deliveries due to problems with access which as not been pre-notified will be returned to our warehouse and charged for both outward and return delivery,

The immediate product wrapping, pallet stretch wrap and wooden pallet can all be recycled.
