Killing two birds with one stone
Thursday 10 February, 2011
News Brief

Dear Spaggs,
Where does the expression "killing two birds with one stone" come from?

Full Story:

We have to agree with a number of on-line sources that using a slingshot and hitting two birds with one piece of stone appears improbable, indeed it would make more sense if the expression was "its as unlikely as hitting two birds with one stone".

Whilst we have no documented proof we would like to speculate that the expression originated with the stone throwing siege catapults (trebuchet) either at the time of the Romans or perhaps in the European Middle Ages, The act of launching rocks sometimes weighing up to half a tonne at an enemy would not only destroy fortifications but also injure or kill adversaries. ie achieving the feat of "killing two birds with one stone".

Our images show stone siege balls probably weighing up to 60kg each photographed in the grounds of the Castel Sant' Angelo in Rome, together with a modern interpretation of a trebuchet taken at Urquhart Castle, Loch Ness in Scotland.
