LECA^® LWA - The industry standard lightweight expanded clay aggregate in a 10 to 20mm grade. Delivered pre-packed to provide a lightweight horticultural substrate and construction infill in particular for situations where access is challenging or restricted.

Water Saturated Density:
When saturated for at least 24 hours, 10-20mm LECA^® LWA is likely to absorb approximately 30% by weight of water with a resultant bulk density in the order of 500kg/m³

Description:
Genuine and original LECA^® LWA distributed prepacked in the UK by Specialist Aggregates.

50ltr packs delivered by courier are offered for small projects, trial and research purposes.
Expanded clay granules are made by pelletising and firing selected clay in a rotary kiln at a very high temperature. As it is fired, the organic compounds in the clay vaporise forcing the pellets to expand and become honeycombed, while the outside surface of each granule fuses to give a ceramic shell. The resulting granules are lightweight, porous, and have good resistance to crushing.

Being a natural product expanded clay aggregate contains no harmful substances, it is inert with neutral pH, The granules are resistant to frost and chemicals, and will not break down in water. They are also non-combustible and have excellent sound and thermal insulation properties, further they can be used with cement to make a non-structural lightweight concrete suitable for fake rocks, theatre props and lightweight repairs.

Application & Use:
Top quality clean general purpose expanded lightweight clay with a minimum of fines,and backed by the worldwide LECA^® brand.

The product is a dark grey/brown colour and offered for use in situations where aesthetics are not a prime consideration, in particular:

Horticulture: As a substrate in hydroponics, and blended with other growing media to improve drainage and provide insulation.

Green Roofs: The web contains advice on many and often contradictory methods for producing green roofs. Nevertheless 10-20mm Leca^® LWA provides the definitive product for bottom and peripheral drainage. To create lightweight soils we would recommend 4-10mm grade Leca^® LWA.

Backfill to structures: Especially for situations with restricted access for example the rear gardens and roof terraces to properties or shopping malls and for providing lightweight fill to planters.

Compaction: Typically (above the water table) the product is likely to compact by 8-12% when poured loose from a pack to its final compacted state.
