Lightweight volcanic Substrate - adaptable staging and image placement media.

Lightweight volcanic substrate is around one quarter of the weight of "normal" aggregate, providing maximum surface cover with minimum placement effort for Sci Fi, fantasy planet and catwalk staging. Note, however, that the open texture of the product only allows for it to be placed at low a low angle.

The product provides a low reflectance surface for photographic assignments with good clean item holding characteristics.

Lightweight volcanic substrate gives a scrunchy sound when walked upon and is comfortable under bear foot, however, we would not recommend negotiating across the surface in "heels".The product will crush under both foot and vehicular traffic

Being lightweight the product is easily cleared away with no special requirements for disposal.

Ground Cover & Plant Topping:
Lightweight volcanic substrate provides a versatile free draining ground cover and pot topping especially effective for low growing alpines and herbs. The grit also provides a quick draining “collar” to plants that are susceptible to excess moisture.

Terrariums, bottle gardens and Vivariums :
Use as a free draining gravel substrate and soil conditioner when planting both open glass containers and closed terrariums.
In the base of vivariums, use in place of plastic bead or heavy gravel substrate as an effective lightweight drainage layer.

What is Lightweight Volcanic Substrate?
Lightweight volcanic substrate is made by heating small pellets of clay in a furnace. At high temperature organic materials in the clay vaporise forcing the granule to expand into a pumice-like granule, while the outside surface fuses to a ceramic shell. The resulting granules are lightweight, porous and made sterile by the firing process.

Being a wholly natural material. this expanded clay aggregate contains no harmful substances, it is inert with neutral pH, The granules are resistant to frost and chemicals, and will not break down in water. They are also non-combustible and have excellent insulation properties.

The product contains a mix of both broken and whole particles. Broken granules have a black honeycomb structure while the complete pellets can be either black or terracotta in colour. The total appearance is that of an explosive volcanic surface.

Density:
Volume for volume Lightweight Volcanic Substrate is in the order of a quarter of the weight of "normal" stone based coarse sand having a dry bulk density of approximately 450kg/m³.

Water Absorption:
When saturated for at least 24 hours Lightweight Volcanic Substrate is likely to absorb approximately 20% by weight of water.

This product option is supplied packed in safe and easy to handle weatherproof packs stacked on a wooden pallet. Packs are stretch wrapped onto the pallet for added protection and security.

Pallets are delivered by national couriers and off-loaded onto a level hard-standing using vehicle tail-lift and pallet truck. Our couriers do not offer a crane (Hiab) off-load facility.

Pallet deliveries by national couriers are not advised for locations with narrow or difficult access. Please advise during checkout or contact our office for advice if you have specific delivery requirements or concerns.

Failed deliveries due to problems with access which as not been pre-notified will be returned to our warehouse and charged for both outward and return delivery,

The immediate product wrapping, pallet stretch wrap and wooden pallet can all be recycled.
