News Brief

Limestone rockery and walling with an extraordinary lineage.

Full Story:

In collaboration with Longcliffe Quarries, Specialist Aggregates can now offer a random light buff coloured limestone block suitable for walling, rockery and gabion fill.

The stone comes from the same horizon as the world famous limestone once quarried at Hopton Wood, located down the Via Gellia approximately two miles to the South East towards Matlock.

The limestone of this area is some of the purest in Europe, and has been worked since Roman times. From the late eighteenth century Hopton Wood Limestone was much prized as it could be extracted in large blocks, and once sawn into slabs its fine grained surface could be polished to a marble-like finish. Its distinctive, understated elegance found favour as a durable stone which was used in historically important sites from Westminster Abbey to The Bank of England and the Albert Memorial in Hyde Park.

Uniquely for fifty years from 1959 the beds of Hopton Wood Limestone were mined under Middleton Moor, utilising an immense room and pillar extraction method. During that period it is estimated that sixteen million tonnes of high quality calcium carbonate stone were extracted.

Our images show part of a dry stone wall and gabion fill both using Longcliffe limestone, together with a close-up of Longcliffe’s premium product, crushed and graded calcium carbonate granules utilised as the basis for a range of industrial processes including glass and ceramics, industrial sealants and agriculture.

Associated with quarrying in the area we also have images of part of an unpublished geological plan of the workings for Hopton Wood Limestone under Middleton Moor as they existed in 1974, together with detail of the polished art deco Hopton Wood Limestone pulpit at St Matthews Church in Jersey.
