Spaggs Motorway Quiz
“Which was the first motorway to open in the UK?”

Full Story:

Answer: The M6 Preston by-pass in Lancashire

Bonus Question: "Which was the first motorway in the UK to be closed for repairs?"

It was a long wet two years during 1957/8 whilst building the first 8 mile stretch of the M6 in Lancashire and many of the techniques used were at the fore-front of road building at that time.

A piece of British motorway history was achieved on 5th December 1958 with the opening of the road by Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, however, the structure was a far cry from what we now recognise as a motorway. For a start it only had two lanes, there was no central crash barrier, and the hard shoulder was designed to be little more than a country lane.

Saturated ground conditions, coupled with inadequately specified sub base materials conspired with a rapid thaw in January 1959 to cause frost damage to the surfacing layers, and the road had to be closed for repairs.

We are often asked our opinion on decorative materials for surfacing pathways and drives, however, the story of the M6 demonstrates that due consideration to structural (sub-base) layers whilst not seen, provides for long-term benefits.

We have searched our archives but are unable to find an early image of the M6 at Preston, the images show an early stertch of the A1, and building of the M54 in Shropshire.

P.S. 52 years later there are now over over 2200 miles of motorway in the UK.
