News Brief

Murder of stone inhabitants of Barnstaple

Full Story:

Stone has a life and soul; however, these inaccessible caged monoliths jar like medieval severed heads on the causeway to the most ancient borough of Barnstaple in Devon. Even the lampposts stand like gibbets awaiting their next victim.

The installation called Barum Stenning, (Old English, Stone Inhabitants of Barnstaple) was commissioned in 2007 by Devon County Council to mark the opening of the town's western by-pass and is reputed to represent the history and geology of the area.

It would appear serendipitous that early geologists called the vast sequences of sandy beds dramatically exposed on the nearby cliffs at Ilfracombe the “Hangman Grits”, but this installation demonstrates a lack of understanding of geological process, its harmony and balance, and is no more than a representation of mans' arrogance believing that he can contain and manipulate beyond the force of nature.

Our images show Barum Stenning (top) and by contrast the accessible and tactile stone direction marker at the entrance to Narita Airport Tokyo, and the triple granite menhir leading to the Welsh language centre at Nant Gwrtheyrn on the Llyn Peninsula.
