News Brief

389 Years - a long time for a repeat order!

Full Story:

We cannot claim to have supplied the original Plymouth Rock on which the Pilgrim Fathers are said to have landed in America in 1620, however, almost 389 years later Specialist Aggregates did supply a replica to form the base of a commemorative statue to Edward Winslow one of the founding fathers of the Plymouth Colony.

Winslow was a salt merchant from Droitwich in Worcestershire UK and the commemorative statue to his endeavours was unveiled in the town’s St Andrews Square in January 2009.

We understand that the original Plymouth Rock, part of which is located as a National Monument on the foreshore at Plymouth Massachussetts comprises a geological type known as granodiorite, and before it was broken into two in 1774 the stone weighed in excess of nine tonnes.

Granodiorites are coarse grained igneous rocks comprising a predominance of quartz and plagioclase feldspars and accessory minerals including biotite mica and hornblende. Geologists believe the stone to be a glacial erratic and have traced its origin to an area of mixed granitic materials found to the south and west of present day Boston.

Our images show the statue commemorating Edward Winslow in Droitwich town centre, together with the celebration to Salt Workers for which the town is also famous.

Update Feb 27th 2013:
Located near Boston UK, the monument commemorates the initial (failed) departure in 1609 of the group later to be known as the Pilgrim Fathers on the first phase, via Holland, of their voyage to the New World. The memorial is made from silver grey granite similar to the material of the Barbican steps in Plymouth from which the Pilgrims finally left England in September 1620.
