News Brief

Innovative Primary School incorporates a geological learning zone

Full Story:

The wraps were still on one of the UK’s newest schools yesterday as final preparations were being made to open the new Dewstow Primary School in Caldicot, Monmouthshire.

Specialist Aggregates are delighted to have been involved in the specification and supply of feature rocks for the Geo-plaza, a key element of the external learning zone.

The company were first contacted in the Spring of 2011 with regard to specification of geologically themed products for the earth science and environment learning zone. Drawing on experience gained over over 20 years (the first similar project was Stafford’s Oakridge Primary School’s courtyard in 1992) Specialist Aggregates selected a group of feature boulders demonstrating the key geological principles of sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks.

As well as the boulders, the learning zone has a “Jurassic Beach”. Just like at the World Heritage Site at Lyme Regis in Dorset, the sands contain fossils including ammonites, crinoids stems and cubes of iron pyrite, (fools gold).

Our images show the play sand area still under wraps with rounded feature boulders in the foreground. The geo-plaza area and a recycled crushed brick footpath leading to the sensory garden with violet coloured sand.
The final image shows daughters Charlotte and Catherine at the Oakridge Courtyard Challenge Garden ( cf Anika Rice ) in 1992.
