News Brief

Is it against the law to take pebbles from the beach?

Full Story:

Strictly speaking, yes it is, but thankfully we don’t have “Pebble Police” ( just made very sure the spelling of that one was correct!) lurking behind the rocks.

Beaches in the UK above the high water mark are owned or cared for by a number of agencies including Local Authorities, The National Trust and some cases private companies/individuals. The intertidal zone, the bit between high and low tide, is owned by the Crown.

Occasionally on sites of Special Scientific or geological interest such as at Priests Cove, on the Western tip of Cornwall, specific signs warn against removing materials, however, as the holes in the pockets of most of my waterproof jackets will testify, I’m guilty as charged when it comes to gathering pebbles.

Try as we might we couldn’t find a simple “10 point good code of practice guide to beaches” on t’internet, however, should such a document exist, with regard to pebble collecting Specialist Aggregates would like to add:
Pebbles should not be collected for commercial gain.
Pebbles should not be removed from any location in such quantities that require containers, shovels and vehicular get-away!
For every pebble collected, clear one piece of litter off the beach, plus one piece extra as a “thank you”.

Our images shows Specialist Aggregates’ boss on a New Years Eve excursion along the Dawlish Sea Wall in Devon, keeping a watchful eye for “pebble Police” behind some granite rock-armour, and enjoying the spectacular Permian sandstone cliffs which provide not only the dark red beach sand but also an abundance of superb limestone pebbles.

Probably one of the most extreme examples of “robbing” pebbles also comes from Devon. At the turn of the twentieth century so much material was dredged from waters around Start Point to build fortifications in Plymouth Sound that during the winter storms of 1917 both the shingle beach protecting the foreshore and the fishing village of Hallsands were washed away.

All gravels and pebbles from Specialist Aggregates are responsibly sourced from licensed deposits.
