What is an arenaceous sandstone?
Thursday 10 February, 2011
News Brief

Dear Spaggs,

Can you explain - What is an arenaceous sandstone?

Full Story:

The word arenaceous or (arenite) refers to the constituent grain size of a sedimentary rock and defines what may generally be called a sandstone.

Whilst the particle size within these rocks typically ranges from 63 microns (63 thousand's of a millimetre) to 3mm, the chemistry of the grains can vary from quartz, to feldspar, mica and other minerals.

The constituents of these rocks are the result of weathering of other rocks, and just to add three further variables, the degree of weathering, sorting and the mode of cementing the particles together to form a competant rock gives rise to a host of other geologically defined names including arkose, gritstones and greywacke.

When sorcing sandstone two main criteria prevail: Is the colour complimentary to the scheme for which it is being proposed? and will the rock that is being specified be suitably durable especially in terms of its frost resistance for application.

Our image shows a Desert Sandstone from the Permian era which was collected from the Eden Valley near Penrith, Cumbria UK. The sample has been sliced very thinly and then viewed under a microscope. The field of view is approximately ½ mm across and shows well rounded grains of quartz with further over growths of quartz cementing the rock together. (Grains at 4,O'clock, and 9 O'clock show this well )
