Limestone Fact-File :

Limestone occurs widely in the geological past and generally represents periods of time when wide-spread warm shallow waters existed similar to the Great Barrier Reef today.

Limestone was once extensively worked throughout Derbyshire and Yorkshire, as well as North Wales and Central the South West as durable building stone that would take a reasonable polish. Today quarries work the stone for road materials, concrete and cement manufacture.

Our whitecliffe rockery has an amazing pedigree coming from the same geological strata as the stone used to floor the Bank of England and to provide the steps to the Albert Memorial in Hyde Park London.

Is Limestone Suitable for Alpine Rock Gardens ?
We would agree with much of the published wisdom that the softer, laminated often referred to as Oolitic limestones are probably not suitable for alpine rockeries as they can easily break down under the action of frost and plant root growth.

However, we would challenge the view that limestone in general is not suitable due to its calcium carbonate (lime) content. We would contend that if the stone is clean before being built into a rockery, the weathering effect of rainfall on a hard limestone is unlikely to alter the pH of the surrounding soil within several lifetimes.

Consider that the Alpine region of Europe being the type area for "Apline" plants is geologically predominantly composed of limestone.
